The Munster Bar, possibly the oldest pub in Waterford, has closed after being in business since 1853. Owned by the Fitzgerald family for three generations and seven decades, Peter Fitzgerald and his brothers decided to close the pub on Easter Sunday, leading to a heartfelt response from the local community and patrons who cherished their time at the establishment.

Local director and musician David Hennessy made a touching gesture to the family during the pub’s final days, as they expressed gratitude for the support and memories shared over the years.

Despite surviving two major recessions and the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision to close the pub was influenced by the owners’ ages and the changing pub trade landscape, particularly post-COVID. The community has expressed sadness at the closure but wishes the Fitzgerald family well in their future endeavours, as the future of the establishment remains uncertain.
