Irish customs authorities are to introduce stricter regulations on tobacco products entering Ireland from other EU states on Tuesday next December 9.

Travellers exceeded the personal allowance of 800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars or 1kg of rolling tobacco faced full confiscation of the entire amount.

Revenue treated excess quantities as clear evidence that goods were intended for commercial purposes rather than personal use.

Individuals had to transport the duty-paid products themselves and prove they acquired them for personal consumption.

The rules applied only to persons aged 17 or over.

Michael Gilligan shared “Under the new regulations coming into effect on December 9, where a person brings in duty-paid tobacco products in excess of these quantities, this will be taken as clear evidence that the goods are not for personal use”
