Inland Fisheries Ireland has published “Aquatic Plants in Ireland-A Photographic Guide” featuring 401 different aquatic plant species found in Irish rivers, lakes, and ponds.
The book aims to accurately identify the plant species in Irish freshwater habitats and highlight the vulnerability of aquatic environments to biodiversity loss, climate change, and invasive species.
The guide includes over 1,200 full-colour photographs and diagrams to aid in identifying the flora in freshwater habitats across the country.
It also covers invasive alien plant species that are rapidly expanding their range in Ireland’s watercourses and negatively impacting native habitats and biodiversity.
The book was funded by Inland Fisheries Ireland and compiled by three experienced Irish field ecologists. The publication fills a gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive resource for identifying aquatic plant species in Ireland’s freshwater habitats.
