A new beach resort in Wonsan, North Korea, dubbed the ‘North Korean Benidorm,’ is set to open soon at the site of a former missile launch facility, aiming to attract tourists and bolster the local economy.
The resort, inspired by Kim Jong-un’s 2017 visit to Spain’s Costa Blanca, is designed to accommodate up to 100,000 visitors at a time and is part of North Korea’s efforts to enhance its tourism infrastructure.
Controversially, the construction was halted during the pandemic, with homeless individuals occupying the unfinished hotel, but work has since resumed and the resort is expected to open in May 2025.
While the resort may eventually welcome tourists from Russia and China, it remains uncertain if Western tourists will ever be permitted.
