An official report has identified England’s National Grid’s failure to maintain an electricity substation as the cause of the Heathrow airport fire in March which resulted in the stranding of thousands of passengers.

Ofgem opened an investigation into National Grid Electricity Transmission following the report’s findings. Questions have been raised about England’s crumbling infrastructure and the inability of Europe’s largest airport to respond to the event.

Ofgem shared that the review had “established that the root cause of the fire was a preventable, technical fault. There are important lessons to be learnt about cross-sector resilience and the need for increased coordination.”
