Ryanair has paid €17,750 in damages as a result of an incident in which a 13-year-old boy suffered second-degree burns from a spillage of hot chocolate on a Ryanair flight from Dublin to the Canary Islands.
Barrister Conor Kearney said the boy spilled hot chocolate on his left thigh while passing a cup to his cousin, causing injury to the front and back of his leg.
The boy, represented by his father, sued Ryanair under the Montreal Convention, which required proof of an accident.
Barrister Kevin D’Arcy, counsel for Ryanair, had told him that the Ryanair steward involved in the incident was within the precincts of the court and would vigorously contest the case and in such a situation it would be a matter of whose evidence the judge preferred. An offer of €17,750 was approved by the court.
