Salisbury, Massachusetts, residents spent 600,000 US dollars (€550,000) to protect beachfront homes, but a storm washed away half of the sand just four days after it was put in place.
Despite the high cost and efforts to protect their properties, residents feel they are facing a losing battle against beach erosion.
Residents are seeking assistance from the state to address the erosion problem, with estimates suggesting that a more permanent solution would cost at least $1.5m.
Tom Saab, estate agent and president of the nonprofit Salisbury Beach Citizens For Change, said “what we built this past month, sure, we thought would last longer. But this king high tide hit with a storm out at sea and it was devastating.“
