Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has officially opened the Sean MacEoin centre in Ballinalee to the strains of music from the Longford Pipe Band and backdrop of an Army Colour Party.

Historic ‘Rose Cottage’ in Co Longford, which served as the headquarters of General Seán MacEoin during the “Battle of Ballinalee” in 1920, has been renovated and opened to the public.

The cottage has been transformed into an exhibition centre showcasing the story of the War of Independence and the Battle of Ballinalee.

The local community played a crucial role in bringing this project to life when it was proposed to demolish the cottage.
