Seville’s strategy for Fitur: ‘not more, but better tourists

Seville is set to make a strong impression at the upcoming Fitur tourism fair in Madrid, putting emphasis on “not more, but better tourists” through its cultural offerings, particularly the Flamenco Biennial.

On 15 January 2026, the city’s mayor, José Luis Sanz, unveiled a promotional poster featuring flamenco artist Aurora Vargas, captured by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Emilio Morenatti, to highlight the event running from 9 September to 3 October.

Sanz demanded government support for expanding San Pablo Airport, which is nearing 10m passengers annually, to bolster Seville’s position as a heritage and cultural hub in southern Spain.

With 73 four-star and 14 five-star hotels (five more five-star openings planned for 2026), the city aims to attract higher-value visitors. Tourism delegate Angie Moreno noted record figures for 2025, with nearly 3.5m travellers and 7.8m overnight stays up to November, reflecting a 23pc growth in visitors since 2023. Seville will promote connectivity with 87 airports and alliances like the new urban cities network at Fitur, focusing on sustainable, competitive urban tourism.
