SOLAS, a new €4m Visitor Experience and Tourism Hub in the North Mayo Gaeltacht village of Eachléim, will open for the Easter holidays.
The centre’s opening, supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development, Údarás na Gaeltachta, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Pobal, Mayo County Council and Fáilte Ireland,, aims to showcase the history, heritage, and language of the Mullet Peninsula, offering interactive exhibitions and installations to visitors.
The venue will feature displays on the area’s history, including weather warnings from Blacksod Lighthouse during WWII, assisted emigration to the US and Canada, the local whaling industry, shipwrecks along the coastline, and pirates who once sailed the waters.
The bilingual experience at SOLAS, presented in Irish and English, invites visitors to engage with exhibits through modern interactive touchscreens, offering an educational and immersive journey into the essence of Irish heritage and the region’s biodiversity.
