Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic is activating its final special summer traffic operation on Friday, 28 August, anticipating nearly 6.9m car journeys as the massive August holiday getaway concludes through Monday, 31 August 2026. The operation begins at 15:00 hours on Friday and runs until midnight on Monday.
The movements include returns from holidays, departures for September breaks, travellers heading home to other European countries and visitors attending the Aragón MotoGP Grand Prix. Heaviest delays are expected during late Friday afternoon and throughout Sunday as return trips merge with regular weekend local traffic. The operation is part of a record-level summer schedule tracking over 104m total long-distance movements.
Authorities have urged drivers to plan carefully given the overlapping flows. Heightened radar controls, alcohol and drug checkpoints and road regulations will be active. The Guardia Civil will deploy extra reversible and auxiliary lanes on high-density entry corridors into major metropolitan zones, with maximum deployment of traffic-focused officers managing primary coastal and inter-city routes.
