Sligo’s campaign for UNESCO World Heritage Site status for ‘The Passage Tomb Landscape of County Sligo’ progressed with the first formal nomination team meeting.

The meeting, chaired by Martin Lydon, gathered a mix of national and local stakeholders to advance the nomination process.

The bid was officially placed on Ireland’s World Heritage Tentative List in July 2022, representing a crucial step toward achieving UNESCO inscription.

The project aims to secure community involvement and support while developing a Nomination dossier and management plan for the prehistoric landscape.

If successful, the site would join Ireland’s three existing World Heritage Sites: Brú na Bóinne, Sceilg Mhicíl, and the Giant’s Causeway. Three sites are on the tentative list, royal sites of Ireland: Cashel, Dún Ailinne, Hill of Uisneach, Rathcroghan Complex, and Tara Complex, Waterville’s Transatlantic Cable Ensemble and the Passage Tomb Landscape of County Sligo.
