Thailand has lifted a ban on afternoon alcohol sales that has been in place since 1972. The ban was lifted on 3 December 2025 which prohibited sales from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Authorities introduced the change after a 15-day public consultation. The policy will operate on a 180-day trial basis. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is projecting 33.4m visitors for 2025 but numbers have declined by about 6pc. European markets are holding up. Thailand received 70,000 visitors a year from Ireland.
Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram shared “The afternoon sales ban was introduced long ago to prevent civil servants from drinking during office hours. But that era is over so the ban should be lifted.”
