
Tánaiste Simon Harris meets US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington DC on 25 September 2025 to discuss bilateral relations.
Ireland’s market share of US inbound traffic was 1.9pc by passenger numbers and 4pc by market spend in 2024, with $1,863m spend on irish travel to the USA, including air fares. US visitors to Ireland spent $3,848M in the other direction. leaving the US with a tourism trade deficit of €1,985m. The USA has a 21.8pc market share of tourism visitor numbers to Ireland and 28.8pc of spend.
Lutnick previously criticised Ireland’s tax system, calling it a “tax scam” in March 2025, raising concerns about corporate tax practices.
The meeting aims to address tourism, trade and economic cooperation between Ireland and the US, focusing on mutual interests. Lutnick has also raised conerns aboutb the tourism balance of trade with Ireland.
This bilateral engagement follows a series of diplomatic exchanges to strengthen Ireland-US economic ties.
