The US Department of Transportation is conducting a review of airlines’ data privacy practices, requesting information from the 10 largest US airlines to ensure they are safeguarding customer data and not misusing or selling personal information.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of ensuring airlines are properly protecting passenger data to maintain consumer confidence, while Sen. Ron Wyden highlighted the need for regulatory oversight to address potential privacy breaches.

The DOT is seeking specific details from airlines about their data collection, handling, and use procedures, as well as any passenger data monetization with outside companies, policies to prevent data breaches, and customer complaints related to personal data misuse. The agency plans to use this information to establish best practices guidelines.
