Valentia Island in County Kerry and Hearts Content in Newfoundland are now working together to bid for UNESCO status based on their transatlantic cable legacy.

The two locations were connected them via an undersea telegraph cable until 1966, a hundred years after the cable was laid by the Great Eastern.

Both cable stations were added to their countries World Heritage Tentative List in July 2022, with efforts ongoing for UNESCO World Heritage inscription.

A visit by a delegation from Newfoundland to Valentia Island included tours of sites related to the Transatlantic Cable project, discussions on joint management structures and community partnerships, and a community reception.
