Waterford Airport’s redevelopment, William Bolster, criticized Minister of State James Lawless for suggesting that the airport needs a stronger business case, asserting that their figures have been independently stress tested and are sound.

Minister Lawless argued there are no obstacles to the airport operating propeller planes immediately but expressed concerns over the feasibility of the proposed state-supported business model for larger aircraft without confirmed airline commitments.

Bolster refuted the Minister’s claims about propeller planes being viable, explaining that they are typically loss-making, and highlighted the profitability of jet aircraft, which require an extended runway to operate efficiently.

Following a review of the business plan and acknowledging cost increases for necessary runway upgrades, local Senator John Cummins supported the airport’s proposals, insisting that the project will enhance regional connectivity and is still an attractive investment despite rising expenses.
