Houseboat communities along Ireland’s canals are facing steep fee increases, which could lead to displacement and homelessness for traditional canal boat dwellers.

Waterways Ireland is planning to implement a significant hike in annual fees, from €578 to €4,000, and up to €7,500 over a six-year period.

The fee increases will affect houseboat dwellers in Dublin’s docklands as well as Sallins, Kildare, where fees for a serviced site will go from €278 to over €2,000 per year.

Houseboat residents argue that the proposed fees are unaffordable, particularly for retirees and those on fixed incomes.

TDs have criticised the planned fee increases, expressing concerns about the impact on residents and calling for alternative solutions and supports to be put in place. Waterways Ireland has indicated a willingness to reconsider the fees.
