WestJet mechanics plan to strike on Thursday night after serving a 72-hour notice, prompting the airline to cancel and consolidate flights affecting 6,500 passengers

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association made the decision after WestJet ended talks this week, leading to cancellations to proactively prevent stranded passengers and abandoned aircraft

WestJet has requested arbitration by the Canada Industrial Relations Board to resolve the contract dispute and prevent labour action, a move that the union opposes

WestJet president Diederik Pen said the airline would gourd some aircraft in an organised manner to ensure safety and minimal impact on guests.
