The Irish Self Catering Federation have called for a meeting with minister Kieran O’Donnell to clarify development after the EU gave approval to Irish plans to regulate the short term rental sector.

Under the plans a register is to be finalised by Fáile Ireland and properties in urban zones wil need planning permission, but rural zones are exempt. The issue arise of the definition of 20km ring around an urban zone with a  population of 5,000.

“For the sake of a few thousand properties in rural Ireland this could all be sorted out,” Máire Ní Murchú of the Self Catering federation says.

“Whoever is saying 5,000 is not being responsible. Members are confused and nobody seems to be able to answer our questions. Where did the figure of 5,000 population come from? Twenty miles outside an urban area like Killarney will affect a lot of holiday bed stock.”
