Work to begin in 2026 on ‘the sexy bit’ of the South East Greenway

Works on the section of the South East Greenway incorporating the Mount Elliott Tunnel and Red Bridge have reached the design stage.

The project spans parts of three counties. Commencement is expected this summer, dependent on funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Phase 2, a 5.5km section from Ferrybank to Curraghmore, nears completion, awaiting handover of an access ramp from the North Quays project in January. The tender for Lot 4 contract goes to advertisement in the first quarter, with works starting in summer 2026. The trail head at Rosbercon approaches planning, including recreational facilities and a multi-use games area.

Funding restrictions occur on an annual basis, requiring staggered works. Allocation for this year allows start in mid-2026 but not completion within the calendar year. Further budgets follow in 2027. TII commits to funding without leaving the project incomplete. For active travel in New Ross, including ring road upgrades for footpaths, lighting, and cycle lanes, approval reached design stage, but concerns arise over potential dried-up funding.

Michael Sheehan shared “the public would be delighted to see the sexy part of the greenway finally open when works were complete at the Red Bridge.”

Sean Meyler shared “Completing the greenway is very much dependent on funding, we don’t have any fear that the project won’t be funded but funding will be restricted on an annual basis. It doesn’t mean we’re not going to be funded to do what we want to do. For example this year’s allocation will necessitate us starting the work on Lot 4 at the midway point of 2026, but we won’t have enough money to finish it in the calendar year.”
