The number of violations of the Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022 has nearly tripled this year, with inspectors detecting 542 contraventions from January to August 2023.

This figure represents a significant increase from 199 contraventions during the same period in 2022 and surpasses the total of 464 violations recorded for the entire previous year.

The law was implemented to ensure that businesses properly pass on customer tips to their staff.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) is actively monitoring compliance with this legislation to protect employees’ rights regarding gratuities.
