Storms have caused widespread delays, diversions and cancellations at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona El Prat airports. Disruptions built throughout the day and intensified in the late afternoon. The severe storms primarily focused their heaviest damage over the weekend of 3-4 October 2026, with operational backlogs continuing into 6 October.

Barcelona-El Prat Airport bore the heaviest impact, recording approximately 385 flight cancellations over the weekend alone. Torrential rainfall peaking at up to 150 mm in just four hours triggered a red alert. On Monday, 5 October, and Tuesday, 6 October, air traffic controllers were forced to heavily throttle airspace capacity, leading to rolling delays that exceeded four hours for surviving routes. The storm caused rainwater leaks inside Terminal 1 and its primary car parks.

Because airlines use tight, back-to-back rotations through major Spanish hubs, the massive delays out of Barcelona created a severe nationwide deficit of available aircraft and crew. This caused knock-on schedule changes, diversions, and delays at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. Separately, technology firm Indra has secured cybersecurity and technology contracts with airport operator Aena worth more than €120m, including an €80m system for managing airport operations.
