Spain’s national day was celebrated in the Riu Plaza Gresham Hotel for the first time at an event which brought together representatives of the travel industry and various other Hiberno-Spanish co-operative ventures.

Speaking at the event, ambassador Ion de la Riva mentioned that Spain is the fastest growing economy in Europe and the “preferred tourist destination of the Irish population, two million Irish men and women visit Spain, and no other European country can say. When Pedro Sanchez came to Dublin Leo Vadadkar was very kind and thoughtful and reminded him that we are Ireland’s oldest ally, since times inmemorial.”

The Cervantes Institute had a successful Mediterranean July event in Barcelona with countries from the southern neighbourhood, where Palestine and Israel came together and worked together at the residency and I feel very proud for having negotiated that programme.

He said the Spanish soccer team “had a double victory, both in terms of their talent and in defeating gender discrimination. Our ladies have manifested their strong talent at kicking the ball you know, but they also they kicked out Rubiales and that is a victory, not just for women in Spain.”

He said a civil society forum is being created for people-to-people contacts, enterprise, culture, science, and tourism, to be held in Coruna in June.
