Bewley’s wins sustainable coffee production award from Integrated Open Canopy system

Bewley’s has been recognizsed for its pioneering role in sustainable coffee production through the innovative Integrated Open Canopy (IOC) system, which maintains 50pc of coffee farms as conserved or restored forest habitat.

Environmentalist Dr. Jane Goodall has praised Bewley’s efforts, highlighting the issues of ecosystem destruction and poverty among coffee farmers, and noting the importance of sustainable practices in the industry.

The company is supporting projects that utilize solar energy and biofuel for coffee drying, reducing reliance on forest-clearing for firewood, and aims to set a new sustainability standard in coffee processing.

Bewley’s is collaborating with the Mesoamerican Development Institute (MDI) to produce Subirana coffee, leveraging patented technology that lowers greenhouse gas emissions while restoring biodiversity and securing sustainable livelihoods for farmers.

Dr Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute shared “I applaud Bewley’s for being the leading company supporting sustainable coffee grown using the groundbreaking IOC method,” said and who found global fame for her work with chimpanzees.
