Tourists have been evacuated again from the Blule Lagoon in Iceland as a renewed volcanic eruption began on April 1, 2025, at the Sundhnúkur crater row on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland.
This follows an extensive earthquake swarm with over 200 tremors detected. The initial fissure opened near Grindavík, rapidly extending and breaching protective barriers, raising strong concerns for the safety of the town.
Emergency services implemented swift evacuation orders for Grindavík, affecting around 4,000 residents, while the nearby Blue Lagoon tourist site temporarily ceased operations.
Lava flows severed the main access road and damaged power lines, while a hot water pipeline rupture indicated significant ground deformation in the area.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported a substantial subterranean magma reservoir indicating that this eruption could signal a new period of volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula, characterised by ongoing geological changes.
