Tipperary County Council us revealed an agreement to compulsorily purchase Kearney’s Castle at 16 and 17 Main Street, Cashel, under the Derelict Sites Act 1990.
The 0.196-hectare site, a former hotel owned by the Cummins family, faces a map deposit for inspection at Clonmel Civic Offices until 24 October 2025.
The purchase follows negotiations with the Cummins family, aiming to repurpose the building for civic use such as a cultural or tourism centre.
The derelict structure stands as a landmark on Cashel’s Main Street, with potential to boost local business and tourism.
The council plans swift development to honour the site’s legacy and integrate it into the town’s economic and social fabric.
Liam Browne shared: “This marks a significant moment for our town, as one of Cashel’s most iconic buildings is now set to enter a new chapter – one that we hope will reflect its historic stature and central location.”
John O’Heney shared: “This is a hugely important milestone for one of Cashel’s most recognisable landmarks.”
