The Port of Auckland has launched plans for the new Te Waharoa international cruise terminal and construction proceeds towards an opening in early 2027. The project forms part of a wider 200 million dollar investment that includes development of a big ship wharf at Bledisloe North capable of handling 350 metre vessels. Officials revealed the terminal on 27 March 2026 as part of infrastructure improvements.

The facility features a new pick up and drop off area for buses and taxis together with direct access for passengers to ferry services hotels and restaurants. It handles up to 1,500 people per hour and supports the arrival of more large cruise ships. Over 300,000 cruise passengers pass through the port each year at present.

The investment aligns with tourism as the second largest export sector in New Zealand that contributes around 7.7 pc of gross domestic product. The cruise industry generates more than 600 million dollars in economic value for Auckland annually. Mayor Wayne Brown and Port of Auckland CEO Roger Gray both addressed the development during the launch event.

Roger Gray shared “We are investing in infrastructure that supports Auckland long term prosperity.” Wayne Brown shared “I welcome this investment from Port of Auckland that will lift the experience of visitors arriving in our city from the water.”
