Dublin airport says 90pc of passengers will clear security in under 20 minutes during summer 2024 with half of them using new C3 scanners, 35 of which will have been installed across the two terminals. Customers are being advised to carry on as normal, and be prepared to take liquids and laptops out of bags, as the roll out of new scanners will not be complete until October 2024 in Terminal 2 and October 2025 in Terminal 2.

Other upgraded facilities at the airport will include a new autism-friendly sensory room, enhanced entertainment for children, and a planned new viewing area for plane enthusiasts, alongside sustainability initiatives and expansion plans to increase passenger capacity to 40m.

Mr McLean said: “50pc of our passengers going through the airport this summer will go through those scanners. It will increase as the years go on. It provides better security protection and improves passenger experience; less things have to be taken out of your bag. We’ll have 10 installed by the end of this month in Terminal 2, and we’ll be up to four in Terminal 1. We’ll pause some of the work during the summer because of how busy it is. There’s 35 of these scanners being installed in total We’re still recommending that people arrive two hours early for a short haul and three hours early for a long haul and that people prepare for security as they would before. We need everyone to prepare as if it was the old technology so we don’t slow down the system.”
