Dublin Airport has installed 23 noise monitors at a cost of approximately €100,000 each to assess the impact of flight noise on communities in north and west Dublin, Meath, and Wicklow.
Complaints about increased aeroplane noise following the introduction of a third runway have led to the installation of the monitors to help the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) meet noise abatement objectives.
The noise monitors provide real-time noise levels online, with some areas experiencing noise levels above 60dB from departing planes.
The Aircraft Noise Competent Authority (ANCA) has set targets for the DAA to reduce the number of people highly disturbed and annoyed by aircraft noise by specific percentages by 2030, 2035, and 2040. There have been enforcement notices and legal challenges related to noise complaints and restrictions on night-time flights.
