Finnair will not place any orders until the airline returns to profitability, according to Chief Financial Officer Kristian Erik Pullola.
The focus has been on improving profitability before addressing the narrowbody renewal question, with half of the narrowbody fleet deemed still suitable for many years. The other half will be addressed when the timing is right.
Finnair’s narrowbody fleet comprises five A319-100s, ten A320-200s, and fifteen A321-200s, with varying average ages. The airline has taken a few steps towards a future narrowbody order but did not disclose further details.
The narrowbody fleet renewal will be part of a planned investment program spanning several years, indicating a strategic long-term approach towards fleet modernization.
Kristian Erik Pullola said “our focus has been on turning around the profitability. After that, we feel that it’s appropriate to come back to the narrowbody renewal question. When you look at our fleet, the majority of the widebody fleet is very new. Half of the narrowbody fleet is still very good for many years to come, and it’s only half of the narrowbody fleet where we have renewal needs, and we’ll address those when the timing is right.”
