In 2024, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued 115 closure orders, up 39pc from the previous year, alongside additional prohibition and improvement orders.
A total of 133 enforcement orders were served for food safety violations, highlighting a 45pc rise in breaches compared to 2023, with significant issues linked to pest control and inadequate hygiene practices.
Pamela Byrne, FSAI Chief Executive, emphasized the concerning rise in enforcement actions, stating that negligence in food safety practices risks consumer health and reflects poorly on the industry.
The FSAI statement emphasised the importance of robust pest control procedures and compliance with food safety legislation, indicating that ongoing violations will not be tolerated, even though most businesses comply with the regulations.
