Germany has initiated border checks with France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg for six months to tackle irregular migration and militancy, following previous checks at other borders.
The decision is speculated to coms in response to recent violent incidents, including a stabbing attack in Solingen linked to a Syrian asylum seeker and the killing of a police officer by a failed Afghan asylum seeker.
These measures challenge the EU’s principle of free movement but are permitted temporarily in the face of serious security threats, as stated by German officials.
The interior ministry reports that the initial border checks have successfully prevented unauthorised entry and led to a significant drop in asylum applications.
