Yesterday’s handover of the Icon of the Seas at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland marked the culmination of seven years of planning and construction by thousands of experts. Representatives signed the necessary documents just two months before the ship’s scheduled debut in Miami in January 2024.
The event was attended by over 1,200 crew members and workers, as well as key figures such as Jason Liberty, the President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, Michael Bayley, the President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, and Tim Meyer, the CEO of Meyer Turku.
According to Liberty, the completion of the Icon of the Seas represents the realization of more than 50 years of innovation and dreaming at Royal Caribbean, creating the ultimate vacation experience.
Michael Bayley said “seven years ago, we had an ambitious idea to create the first vacation truly made for every type of family and adventurer; now, it’s in our hands, and in this final stretch, we’ll bring it all to life for the biggest debut in our history in January 2024.”
Jason Lliberty said “the memories millions of families and holiday makers will make on Icon will be our greatest accomplishment yet.”
Tim Meyer highlighted the significance of the handover, stating that the Icon of the Seas is not only the world’s largest cruise ship, but also the most advanced in terms of design, technology, safety, and energy efficiency.
