Heathrow Airport in London reported over 7.2m passengers last month, marking a 0.4pc increase from the previous year and the busiest May on record.
A spokesperson for Heathrow noted the need for “an honest conversation” about expansion in light of increasing passenger numbers and the capacity challenges the airport faces.
To maintain excellent service and address future demand, the airport insists that expanding capacity is essential for its operations.
The airport plans to submit detailed proposals for the long awaited third runway to the Westminster government during the summer.
Westminster Chancellor (finance minister) Rachel Reeves expressed her support for the expansion project during a speech on growth in January, despite the delays it has faced over the years.
An airport spokesperson shared; “Heathrow continues to deliver excellent service, but to sustain this performance and meet future demand, expanding capacity will be essential. As these record numbers become the norm, it’s time to start an honest conversation about the challenges this presents for an already space-constrained yet highly efficient hub,” shared a Heathrow spokesperson.
