Hostelworld has introduced the ‘Staircase to Sustainability’ framework developed in partnership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, designed to communicate and elevate sustainability practices in the hostelling industry

The framework, tailored for hostels, addresses the sector’s unique challenges and opportunities, recognizing hostels as highly sustainable accommodation options due to reduced water, electricity consumption, and minimal food and packaging wastage

The ‘Staircase to Sustainability’ consists of four levels aligned with GSTC criteria, guiding hostels to communicate their sustainability practices and impact while recognizing achievement with badges on Hostelworld’s website

The framework also caters to climate-conscious travellers by providing a clear pathway to selecting sustainable accommodations, with 1,000 hostels already displaying Level One badges on Hostelworld profiles, signifying positive sustainability practices in place.
