Hurtigruten has retrieved a second batch of its “bubbles from the sea” cache of sparkling wine, which was submerged to age underwater off the Norwegian coast near Kirkenes. The cruise line has 4,500 bottles stored at a depth of 34 meters since November 2023, surpassing the 1,500 bottles from the previous season.

Launched in 2023, “Bubbles from the Sea” is recognized as the first sparkling wine aged underwater in the Arctic region, creating a unique taste experience different from other products in the market.

The underwater storage conditions in the Norwegian Sea have been found to enhance the structure of the wine, improve effervescence, create smoother bubbles, and moderate acidity and sweetness for more rounded tannins.

Due to high demand for the unique sparkling wine, Hurtigruten plans to submerge 5,000 bottles in a new, undisclosed location along the Norwegian coast in September to continue exploring innovative ways to create distinctive products.

Hurtigruten CEO, Hedda Felin said “by storing sparkling wine at the bottom of the sea under favourable conditions, we have managed to create a unique taste experience that stands out from other products on the market. Innovation and creativity are key to success in our industry, and we will continue to explore new and exciting ways to create unique products.”

Tani Gurra, front of house and beverage director for Hurtigruten said “the cooler temperatures of waters such as the Norwegian Sea are even better suited to sparkling wines. The stable underwater environment enhances the structure of the wine, improving effervescence to create smoother, softer bubbles while moderating acidity and sweetness for more rounded tannins”
