Ways of turning Brazil aviation potential into reality were subject of an instructive and lively dedicated session at the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro. Aviation supports 2.1pc of Brazil GDP and employment for 1.9 million people. The panel examined steps required for the sector to deliver an even larger contribution to the national economy.
Fábio Rogério Carvalho CEO of ABR Aeroportos do Brasil participated alongside other industry leaders and academics. The session took place from 14:30 to 15:15 on the sidelines of the 82nd IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro. Participants reviewed challenges that include high operational costs extensive litigation and infrastructure requirements across Brazilian airports.
Speakers addressed policy changes needed to unlock further growth in connectivity tourism and trade. The discussion formed part of broader deliberations at the IATA event hosted in Brazil. Attendees considered opportunities in sustainable aviation fuel production and regional air transport expansion.
Geraldo Alckmin Vice-president of Brazil and minister of Development shared “Brazil does not have just one pioneer in aviation; it has two. From Bartolomeu de Gusmão to Santos Dumont, it has been 300 years of proving that flying was in our destiny.”
Jeanine Pires, Director, Pires Inteligência em Turismo: “Brazil’s most important asset is its domestic market. It is a big country and needs more connections and more destinations. But we don’t have a plan or long-term goals.”
Fábio Rogério Carvalho shared “We must address key barriers to fully realise the potential that exists in Brazilian aviation.”
