Unlikely white knight Guyana is leading the world in aviation sustainability – Willie Walsh at IATA Congress 2025

IATA Director General Willie Walsh  has called for greater transparency regarding the production of sustainable aviation fuels and the effectiveness of existing mandates in stimulating production.

Speaking at IATA Congress in Delhi, Mr Walsh said the Corsia agreement is viewed as a crucial achievement, yet concerns remain over governments undermining its credibility by introducing additional taxes.

Just one country, Guyana, is currently providing Corsia eligible credits to the airline industry.

Discussions at the board level indicate a desire to keep aerospace aircraft and engines exempt from tariffs, with concerns about the complexity tariffs would introduce to the global supply chain.

Any increase in aircraft prices, potentially linked to tariffs, is seen as unwelcome and would be challenged by airlines seeking justification for such increases.

Willie Walsh shared: “We would like to see governments stand behind Corsia. Only one country, Guyana, has made them available credits available to the airline industry. These mandates have failed and failed miserably. We need everybody to start honoring the commitments that they’ve made with actions rather than words. We don’t want to see any of the manufacturers… using tariffs as an excuse or an opportunity to increase their prices.”
