The Irish Hotels Federation argues strongly against a proposed accommodation levy by Dublin City Council, which aims to raise revenue but is opposed by tourism industry stakeholders.

A meeting in January 2022 discussed a 1pc hotel tax to raise €12m for Dublin, the local authority does not have the power to implement it.

Tourist taxes are already applied in cities like Amsterdam (introduced in 2012), with advocates citing the need for visitors to support local facilities and services.

Dublin hotels contribute approximately €25m annually through commercial rates and an additional 5pc levy aimed at enhancing the city experience for all.
