Ireland’s response to the latest deadline extension by the US department of Transportaiotn on the Dublin Airport passenger cap suggests the cap may be removed before the crucial decision making process for summer 2027.

The Irish government has advanced legislation to eliminate the passenger cap at Dublin Airport and lawmakers aim for passage in both houses before the summer break. 

Officials worked to meet the timeline ahead of the Court of Justice of the European Union proceedings.

An advocate general issued an opinion in February that permitted the Irish Aviation Authority to restrict slots. The final ruling from the court shifted to September. This change provided additional time for the bill.

Airlines for America warned about impacts on slot allocation rules across the EU and beyond. The High Court referral in 2024 stemmed from legal action that included Aer Lingus. The Irish Aviation Authority sought to enforce the 32m passenger limit through slot limits.
