What strikes you most about the Culloden Estate and Spa? The sweeping views over Belfast Lough, the Culloden Estate and Spa offers. The unexpected and sudden transformation from urban, or suburban ribbon rows to something maritime and rural, a refined escape that brings together historical charm with contemporary luxury.

This five-star hotel, set within 12 acres of manicured gardens, invites guests to enjoy a serene retreat just a short drive from Belfast city centre.

Originally constructed in 1876 by William Robinson as the official residence for the Bishops of Down, Connor, and Dromore, the Culloden Estate carries a rich legacy. The Gothic mansion, once a private home, has welcomed distinguished guests, from dignitaries to modern-day celebrities. Its interiors, adorned with period antiques, stained glass, and Louis XV chandeliers, reflect its 19th-century origins while offering a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The transformation of the Culloden into a luxury hotel has been thoughtfully executed. Opened as a hotel in 1962 and acquired by the Hastings Hotels group five years later, the estate has been modernised to include 98 individually decorated rooms and suites, each equipped with King Koil ‘Cloud Beds’ and plush linens for optimal comfort.

Somewhat confusingly, there are two lifts, one for the older hotel and historic house, and one for a wing that was added in 2008 and where the floors descend, rather than ascend from the lobby level. The hotel was festooned with art work when we were there, multi million works as part of the Art and Soul exhibition assembled annually by Oliver Gormley’s auctioneer house, modern abstract works that that seemed like they belonged there amongst the bishop’s things.

Our room, 308, came with a garden view, matching bedspread and furniture, two desks, one for the coffee maker and one for the unforgiving laptop,

The addition of an award-winning ESPA spa, complete with thermal facilities such as a eucalyptus steam room, jacuzzi, and sauna, has elevated the property into a haven for relaxation. A linear vitality pool was added in 2021 which enables views of the garden through the floor to ceiling windows and a Tylarium, which is a combination of a sauna and steam room. The hotel also features three dining venues, including the fine-dining Vespers Restaurant (our beef melted in our mouths, to put, ahem, flesh on the bones of the cliché) and the cosy Cultra Inn, both showcasing locally sourced cuisine.

The spa offers tailored treatments, from massages to facials, with relaxation spaces overlooking the gardens. Dining options cater to different moods, whether it’s a sophisticated meal at Vespers with views of Belfast Lough or a relaxed lunch at the Cultra Inn.

The estate’s grounds, dotted with sculptures and woodland trails, encourage leisurely strolls, while the proximity to Royal Belfast Golf Club appeals to those seeking outdoor pursuits. Rooms, ranging from deluxe Lough-view options to spacious estate suites, provide comfort with modern amenities like satellite TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi.
