Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced a landmark expansion in Egypt on 11 February 2026, integrating two of the country’s most historic hotels with the brand’s first-ever luxury Nile river cruise. The groups ay this strategic move creates a seamless, high-end travel experience connecting Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan.
In partnership with the Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG) Holding, Mandarin Oriental will manage and rebranding two legendary properties previously operated under the Sofitel brand.
- Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract, Aswan: The group will assume management of this historic property in May 2026. While the heritage building will remain open to guests, the Nile Wing will undergo comprehensive renovation. The full property is scheduled to officially join the portfolio in July 2027 featuring six dining venues and a signature spa.
- Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor: This iconic hotel, located near the Temple of Luxor, will close in early 2026 for a complete restoration. It is slated to reopen in July 2027 with refreshed rooms, suites, and landscaped gardens.
- Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo: Building on previous announcements, this landmark Cairo hotel is now confirmed for a 2027 reopening following extensive delays.
Luxury Nile Cruise
Developed in collaboration with the Garranah Group, Mandarin Oriental’s first river cruise vessel is currently in design development.
- Itineraries: The cruise will offer three-, four-, and seven-night voyages between Luxor and Aswan.
- Amenities: The vessel will feature spacious suites, three distinct dining venues, and dedicated wellness facilities.
- Experience: Curated cultural programming will include expert-led talks and immersive excursions to significant heritage sites.
Group Chief Executive Laurent Kleitman shared that Egypt as one of the fastest-growing global destinations. By uniting these historic land-based assets with a river journey, the group aims to offer a “fully integrated, destination-led journey” that celebrates Egypt’s cultural richness.
The expansion taps into growing demand for premium heritage and cultural travel in the region appealing to luxury travellers seeking authentic Egyptian journeys with world class service.
