Ryanair has discontinued its carbon offsetting service, which previously offered passengers an option to contribute €2 to offset flight emissions.
Instead the airline aims to focus on sustainability via Sustainable Aviation Fuel, with a deal to use 120m gallons of SAF from 2025 to 2030. The airline follows EasyJet in dropping offsetting schemes altogether.
Industry experts have warned in the past that many carbon offset projects may not effectively reduce emissions, with calls for greater scrutiny of such claims across airlines.
IATA reports that while fuel suppliers face regulatory mechanisms, for airlines, CORSIA allows them to reduce their offsetting obligation by using SAF, potentially creating a direct link with the state authority.
