Ryanair has decided to cease its operations at Maastricht Airport effective 26 October due to increasing costs associated with the airport.
The airline will terminate routes from Maastricht to Alicante Elche Miguel Hernández, Bari, Girona, Porto, and Zadar, citing Maastricht’s high airport taxes as a major factor.
Maastricht Airport acknowledged lengthy negotiations with Ryanair but stated that an agreement could not be reached to ensure financial sustainability for both parties.
The airline reported that its capacity from Maastricht accounted for 76.3% of the airport’s total scheduled passenger capacity, with other airlines like Corendon operating there.
While withdrawing from Maastricht, Ryanair is considering establishing a new base in Trapani following the elimination of a municipal surcharge on tickets for flights to smaller island airports.
Maastricht Airport shared “That means we focus on activities and contracts for both cargo and passengers that are profitable and can cover our costs with a healthy margin. Ryanair wishes to pay at Maastricht Aachen Airport, which are significantly lower than at other Dutch airports.
The airline welcomed that development, promising more frequencies to Trapani,” shared the report regarding potential operations.”
