Ryanair has announced plans to reduce its traffic at Berlin-Brandenburg airport by 20pc, resulting in a loss of 750,000 seats, as a response to the German government and the airport’s failure to address high access costs.

The cutbacks will involve reducing the number of Ryanair’s aircraft based in Berlin from nine to seven and trimming six routes, reflecting the airline’s dissatisfaction with the unaddressed issues surrounding access costs.

Despite what the airline describes as repeated warnings from Ryanair about potential reductions in its Berlin operations and a shift of capacity to other EU countries, Germany did not meet the airline’s demands, which included reversing an aviation tax increase and reducing air traffic control charges.

Ryanair says that the decision to cut traffic at Berlin-Brandenburg airport underscores Ryanair’s response to the unresolved access cost issues and signals the airline’s willingness to make operational adjustments in response to the unmet demands from the German government and airport authorities.
