Ryanair initiated legal action against English company Fortbrand over the alleged failure to maintain aircraft de-icing machines during a cold snap at Stansted Airport in December 2023.

The airline claims losses total €373,000, with £150,000 designated for passenger refunds amidst delays caused by minus-12C temperatures.

Allegedly, Fortbrand’s neglect of maintenance led to additional costs for Ryanair, including £79,000 in passenger care and nearly £17,000 for repairs.

Fortbrand has countersued for £82,000, asserting Ryanair failed to pay for services rendered and contending that no breach of contract occurred. Fortbrand’s response notes, “Ryanair’s claim discloses no properly articulated cause of action.”
