A security alert at Kansas City International Airport in Missouri prompted a swift evacuation of the terminal building on Sunday morning, with authorities moving passengers and staff to the tarmac and other safe areas while inbound aircraft were held on the taxiway, well away from the gates and ramp.
The incident began shortly after eleven fifteen local time when airport officials received reports of a potential threat, leading the Kansas City Aviation Department to take precautionary measures in close coordination with local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Passengers described scenes of rapid movement as law enforcement officers, including teams with canines, swept the facility to assess and substantiate the reported concern, which some sources indicated may have involved a possible device.
The evacuation, affecting sections of the single terminal and causing temporary disruptions to operations, lasted approximately two hours, during which arriving flights remained grounded on taxiways to maintain distance from the affected zones. By early afternoon, officials confirmed that a thorough search had determined the threat was not credible, with no suspicious items or dangers identified.
The terminal and associated parking garage were declared clear and reopened, allowing normal operations to resume gradually, though residual delays continued to ripple through schedules for some departing and arriving services.
FBI Director Kash Patel noted on social media that the matter had been reviewed and deemed non-credible, emphasising that such reports constitute a serious federal offence. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also updated that the situation was resolved and flights were returning to standard procedures.
No injuries were reported during the episode, and the airport expressed appreciation for the rapid response of law enforcement in prioritising passenger safety.
