Sligo County Council secured €200,000 under the THRIVE scheme to develop plans for transforming Sligo Gaol into a community and tourism facility.

The funding supports citizen engagement and designs for further capital applications up to €7m in 2025 for renovation and adaptive reuse. Built between 1815 and 1818, the gaol closed in 1956 and once housed figures such as Michael Davitt, Charles Stewart Parnell, and Michael Collins.

Plans include refurbishing 19th-century structures like Governor’s House, the three-storey asylum building, and cell blocks for tourism and community use.

A new reception building of about 100 square metres with a coffee kiosk will adjoin the asylum building, alongside landscaping, parking, and demolition of 20th-century additions.
