South African Airways requested the Essential Services Committee to investigate classifying pilots cabin crew and ground staff as essential services to restrict strike rights.
The probe covered aircraft operation onboard services boarding gate agents and logistical ground support. SAA submitted the application in December 2025 limiting it to specific safety-critical roles.
Opposition came from the Airline Pilots Association of South Africa Aviation Professionals Association and National Transport Union. Public hearings took place in four South African cities examining safety security and medical transport needs.
The request followed labour disputes and aimed to prevent disruptions in critical aviation functions.
